Today, May 2nd 2006, during class, we read an article called
“Restaurant Offers Taste of Blindness”. This article, from
Reuters 1999, talked about “Gout du Noir” (Taste of
Darkness), an unusual restaurant in Paris in which the
customers had to eat in the pitch dark. This strange way of
eating had caused scores of Parisians, who plunged into this
adventure just to relish a taste of something that they would
never know exactly and that they would never definitely
forget, to pile into the restaurant.
After the discussion about the article we reenacted the
Gout du Noir Restaurant. The group was divided in two
sections- the waiters and the costumers. The customers, who were blinded folded, ate a three-course meal,
which included baby carrots as an appetizer, pizza as the main course, Tim Horton’s timbits as dessert and
warm water to drink.
The waiters could appreciate how their customers experienced so many different emotions. At first, some of
them were so nervous thinking about what they were going to eat. Some were guessing through smell, and
others just waited and were riveted to get a taste of what it’s like to be blind.
After the adventure, most of the customers wanted to have more morsels of the delicious meal the waiters had
offered. Some of them related that they would like to experience these emotions again and others just would
remember this as one of their bravest experiences. |

It was a beautiful Friday morning when teachers and students
set off for an unforgettable day at Toronto’s Harbourfront,
just steps away from Archer College.
The tour guide met us and explained the fascinating history of
this area. We toured the whole Harbourfront area with its old
and new buildings, a shopping mall, and an outside as well as
inside entertainment venue.
The fantastic boat tour took us to a different world, where a
person can get away and enjoy nature. We saw various types
of flora and fauna.
The students were able to take beautiful pictures during the whole day. These pictures included many of
Toronto’s majestic buildings: CN Tower, Rogers Centre, downtown skyscrapers, Royal York Hotel, islands,
natural scenery and much, much more. We enjoyed the day and got to know each other very well. |
