Douglas McKibbin
founded Languages
International
(Toronto), (LI),
more than fifteen
years ago, incorporating
his background
and skills in
two main areas,
education and
business. Mr.
McKibbin is a
member of the
Ontario College
of Teachers and
has taught both
English as a Second
Language (ESL)
and French as
a Second Language
(FSL) at the elementary
and high school
levels in metropolitan
Toronto. During
this time, he
wrote numerous
articles for Canadian
Teacher Magazine
and established
the first program
in Late Immersion
(FSL) for the
Scarborough Board
of Education.
He holds certification
in ESL, FSL and
Adult Education.
Subsequent to his career in public education, Mr. McKibbin began to pursue a career
in business, primarily sales and marketing. As National Sales Manager for Burroughs
Office Supplies, responsible for telemarketing and representatives in the field, he was
instrumental in acquiring the company's largest contract in its history from Epson
Canada. Soon afterward, he was hired by Epson to coordinate their
manufacture and sales of Canadian-made product supplies for Japanese printers
to be distributed inCanada and overseas.
To fully utilize his experience and interest in language education and marketing,
Mr. McKibbin later opened an international ESL school in Toronto in a small space
above a bookstore at the corner of Yonge and Bloor. Since 1995 the school has been
operating in much larger space downtown near City Hall and the Eaton Centre.
LI typically welcomes more than 300 students a year from over 30 countries around
the world who come to Toronto to learn English. Students are usually university age
who return to their home countries after 3-4 months study. LI also has number of
corporate clients. While establishing the school, Mr. McKibbin became active in the ESL
industry by being one of the founding members of the Canadian Association of Private
Language Schools (CAPLS) and has chaired several committees of the association.
In 2004, LI received the "Excellence Award" from Languagecourse.net, an independent
language travel organization, for superior customer satisfaction.
A graduate in Modern Languages from the University of Toronto, he has also studied
Marketing at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute and languages at the Universities of Nice
and Montreal.
