Cathryn Smart has been in the field of Education since 1979. After completing a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Western Ontario, Ms. Smart left for Africa to teach English at a Government Teachers College in a remote village in northern Nigeria. This was her introduction to cross-cultural work experience which shaped her future.
On her return to Canada, Ms. Smart taught Native Canadians in northern Ontario for a year but returned abroad for further international experience. In 1982, she left for Borneo where she taught English to Malaysians at the high school level. On completion of her two-year teaching contract, Ms. Smart remained in Sarawak, working with indigenous women on a rural development project funded by CIDA. Further experiences were gained in Japan where she taught ESL to children ages 3 and up, as well as adults. Ms. Smart also spent three years in Europe where she worked with Canadian Military personnel.

Other Canadian experiences have included completing her ESL Specialist Certificate at a local university, setting up new ESL centres with the local Board of Education, teaching immigrants, mentoring new teachers, and establishing a private language school for international students.

Ms. Smart has been a Director of The Language Circle, now a member of Archer Education Group Inc, since 1997. During this time she and her staff participated in many charity events including the Run for Haiti supporting an orphanage established by local citizens; the Row for Heart with a crew of staff and friends and an event culminating in a regatta to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Spin for City Kidz (local) and Haiti, as well as other events organized to help victims of world disasters.

Extensive travel in over 40 countries, on 5 continents, inspired Ms. Smart's teaching career and global outlook. She looks forward to an ongoing career with an international company, and to her continued relationships with a wide-range of international students.
